Dr Anderson is a Master Mariner having spent his first career at sea with the Bibby Line of Liverpool. He came ashore in 1980 and worked in P&I Clubs – initially handling claims but then pioneered loss prevention and proactive claims reduction initiatives as part of the service provided by the Clubs. He became Director of the Management Company and Manager in charge of Risk Management at North of England P&I Association.
Whilst working with the P&I Club he completed his Doctoral research which involved studying safety management systems and how the ISM Code was being implemented between Phase 1 and Phase 2 implementation deadlines.
After 25 years working in P&I, he left in 2005 and established his own consultancy specialising in a wide range of services specifically linked with marine safety and risk management and the ISM Code. Dr Anderson is widely regarded internationally as one of the world’s leading authorities on the ISM Code. During the last six years he has been appointed Consultant or Expert Witness in over 100 legal cases around the world – including criminal prosecutions – where the way in which the Safety Management System of the ship operating company has been developed and implemented has come under close scrutiny.

He is a Visiting Professor at the World Maritime University in Malmoe Sweden and Dalian PRC, and visiting lecturer at Newcastle University.
